The Porsche 911 Turbo S Certainly Delivers
After more than 50 years, the Porsche 911 line will still catch the attention of aficionados and bystanders alike, and the 2018 Turbo S is no exception. Some say the adjectives are now overused — it’s amazing, it’s powerful, it’s perfect. But once you drive the Porsche 911 Turbo S you will be spouting those same adjectives.
The heart of the Turbo S is a twin-turbo 3.8 liter flat-six engine putting out 580 horsepower, which is 40 more than the 911 Turbo trim. Porsche reports a 0-60 mph time of 2.8 seconds with the standard Sport Chrono package. Sport Chrono offers four selectable modes which increase boost to the turbos, taking the torque from 516 lb-ft to an amazing 553. The mode selector has been moved to the GT Sport steering wheel, along with a Turbo Boost button. The transmission is the PDK dual-clutch automatic and it delivers power to the standard all-wheel-drive system.
Inside the Turbo S is a combination of traditional 911 styling and new touches to keep it up to date. Five traditional gauges are centered behind the steering wheel, but one is now a configurable digital information screen to show a variety of features including navigation, Sport Chrono timers, trip information, and more. The large center console contains a number of buttons to control critical functions without having to deal with the infotainment interface. The multimedia screen includes Apple CarPlay. The interior craftsmanship is excellent and all buttons and interfaces are crisp and clean.
Standard safety features include antilock brakes and stability control. Adaptive cruise control and blind spot warning features are available on any trim. Neither the NHTSA or IIHS have crash tested the Turbo S, but this is not unusual for performance sports cars.
