SSC TUATARA

The SSC Tuatara was created over a decade of careful design to develop a hypercar unlike any other. The result is a fighter jet-inspired road-legal vehicle with extraordinary performance and evolutionary aerodynamics. With a body inspired in collaboration with legendary designer Jason Castriota, the Tuatara offers unique a timeless profile from any angle. SSC and the Tuatara are the dreams of Jerod Shelby, a former racer with a passion to develop a supercar in the United States that could match or exceed the standards set by European designs. The result is Shelby SuperCars and a Guinness World Record in 2007 of 256.14 mph with its Ultimate Aero TT supercar set on a rural Washington road.

When the front and rear deck lids are opened, the strong carbon fiber monocoque and intricate suspension system are exposed. In addition, there is a front storage area for passengers’ possessions and the rear offers a great view of the amazing powerplant. Butterfly-style doors both make entry and exit from the Tuatara an easier task and provide great visual appeal. The interior offers both simplicity and perfect functionality with its digital driver display, centrally located information console with all vehicle information available at the touch of a finger, and a teardrop canopy offering extraordinary visibility for a hypercar.

The beautiful exterior lines of the Tuatara is more than just good looks, but rather the result of careful aerodynamic design to create a car with a coefficient of drag of 0.279, the lowest in its class. The result is unmatched performance coupled with precise downforce at top speed for maximum control. Aerodynamic features include static rear winglets, side-mounted buttresses, and an active rear wing. Air intakes cool the drivetrain then air exits through perforations that maintain the smooth airflow across the Tuatara.

The engine was developed in partnership with Nelson Racing Engines to create an engineering marvel befitting the hypercar experience. The engine is a V-8 with a flat-plane crank configuration developing 1350 horsepower on 91-octane gas or 1750 horsepower on E85 fuel with an 8,800 rpm redline. It is mated to a 7-speed microprocessor-controlled gearbox offering sub-100 millisecond track shifting. The transmission uses a state-of-the-art Automac AMT system for gear engagement and an electrically actuated clutch. There are three driving modes selectable on the center console display; Sport, Track, and Front Lift for additional clearance over speed bumps or other surfaces. The result is a hypercar at home both on the track or in normal street driving.
