POWER IS AMPLIFIED IN THE LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN EVO SPYDER

Lamborghini is repositioning the Huracán slightly by making all 2020 models Evos. This places it above the base models but strengthens its position against the popular Urus SUV. The Huracán Evo is an emotional statement as much as a performance one, and the Spyder accentuates that emotion to a higher level.

The Evo Spyder is powered by a 5.2-liter V-10 engine developing 631 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque and delivering power to the all-wheel-drive through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A limited-slip rear differential is also standard. The Spyder also utilizes Lamborghini’s LDVI system that feeds output from a variety of sensors to a central processor to control the chassis settings for optimal performance. This can include adjusting the rear-wheel steering to work best with the brake-actuated torque vectoring and active dampers.

The front bumpers and rear tail have been revised this year, but the changes are subtle unless you look very carefully. The exhausts are centered and high at the rear for the optimum sound experience. The convertible top operates seamlessly with the push of one button. There is an 8.4-inch touchscreen working the infotainment system in the center stack, which serves to eliminate a lot of buttons from previous models.

The fun begins when you press the start button and hear the V-10 rumble to life. The drive selector defaults to Strada for normal driving conditions. Choose Sport and the LDVI system makes some adjustments for more fun. Go to Corsa however, and the Evo Spyder becomes a much tighter beast with sharp gear changes, a tighter steering setting, and more active dampers.

A performance test using a Huracán Performante with the same engine with Corsa mode and launch control gave a 0-60 time of 2.3 seconds and a quarter-mile in 10.2 seconds at 136 mph. The Spyder is slightly heavier so you might see a slight difference, but being able to open the top will quickly make you forget that difference!
