Porsche Plug-In Hybrid Reinvention
Porsche believes efficiency will be a cornerstone of future vehicle development, according to Porsche CEO Oliver Blume. But this doesn’t mean Porsche will start putting 4-cylinder engines in the iconic 911. Instead, they are working on a plug-in hybrid variant, as well as the next generation of the 911 tentatively named the 992. Porsche has stated publicly they believe the market will be more accepting of a hybrid about 2023.
Analysts believe the 992 design will be the last of its kind. Future Porsche 911s will be built on a different vehicle structure called SAZ, which is VW language for a new sports car platform. VW wants to have a vehicle structure that can be used on various models to simplify manufacturing. Therefore it is expected the 992 will be the last of its kind built as a unique vehicle.
The hybrids will use an upgraded flat-six engine with advanced fuel feed and combustion engineering to optimize efficiency. The expected hybrid system is based on 48V technology which adds 20 hp and 52 lb-ft of torque to the system. The 992 Carrera horsepower will rise from 370 to 400, and the S from 430 to 450. This happens despite the addition of emission reduction equipment that could rob power. The 992 GT3 will use a twin-turbo 3.8-liter engine instead of its previous 4.0 liter. However, Porsche indicates 550 rated horsepower can be expected. The Turbo S will increase from 580 to 620 horsepower, and further increases are expected when Porsche releases Stage III Boxer engines in 2022. There will also be a new 8-speed PDK transmission at that time to handle the increased power demands.
The 992s are planned for reveal starting October 2018, with customer deliveries early in 2019. 992 Turbo Coupe and Carrera GTS models are expected later in 2019 with deliveries in 2020. You can certainly wait until the plug-in hybrid is released in five years or so, but why waste all that time when you can own the last in the current generation of the venerable 911s. Come by Manhattan Motorcars and choose your 992 as they become available; you can always switch to the hybrid when it arrives!
