The Next Generation Porsche 911 Will Soon Be Revealed
The next generation of the venerable Porsche 911 will be revealed at the November 2018 LA Auto Show. Porsche brought several pre-production models to the San Francisco area to test them in the varying road and weather conditions that area is known for. Here are some reflections from passengers who rode with the test drivers.
The new 911 has all of the turbocharge punch of its predecessor. The chassis is well designed and balanced, with the suspension handling the varying road conditions well. The flat-six engine develops a very good sound, aided by the lack of an exhaust filter required in Europe but not in the US.
The new Porsche 911 still carries the DNA of the 911 line, and with models stretching back to the 1960s it was unlikely Porsche would make serious changes in the appearance of the new 911. But at the same time, Porsche must continue to improve performance of the new model versus the old, and they have accomplished that. The new Carrera S turbocharged flat-six will put out 30 more horsepower than its predecessor with engine design changes resulting in 450 horses and 391 lb-ft of torque. That puts it in the range of the 991 Carrera but with greater efficiency. It is expected to have 0-60 mph times under 4 seconds and a top speed over 190 mph. The first models released will be the Carrera S and 4S with PDK automatic transmissions. Standard Carreras will follow, in both coupes and cabriolets, with the Turbo, Targa, and GTS to follow later. Some reviewers believe the Turbo will have in excess of 650 horsepower.
