The Radical 2017 Huracan RWD Spyder

The 2017 Lamborghini Huracan Spyder is now a rear-wheel drive car. Why would you want to give up all-wheel drive for a rear-wheel one which can be more “difficult “ shall we say? Our answer is, “why not?”

If you are looking to own and drive a Lamborghini, you aren’t looking for sedate, but rather a unique experience that requires your skill and concentration. The RWD Spyder offers that thrill, even though there is a $20K price premium. If you can afford either one, does that premium really make any difference. We didn’t think so.

Aficionados feel the two closest competitors to the Huracan Spyder are the Ferrari 488 GTB and the McLaren 675LT. Both are rear-wheel-drive and fall into the same price point arena as the Spyder. They also, like the Spyder, have a distinctive look that won’t be mistaken for anything else. The unique look is to drive the convertible version of the Spyder, with its low-slung profile, large front intakes, and wide stance. You can operate the convertible top in 17 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph without risking any damage.

With the top down or the windows open, you will truly enjoy the sound of that V10 engine developing 580 horsepower. Couple that to a seven-speed double clutch then throw in an aluminum double-wishbone suspension and a hybrid carbon-fiber chassis and let the fun begin. You also have a choice of three driving modes; Corsa is race mode, Strada for city driving, and Sport to maximize the oversteer for the ultimate pulse raise. Lamborghini has also added Adaptive Network Intelligent Management which adjusts the Spyder’s behaviors as it learns the driver’s style. They also included electronic stability control and the available dynamic steering which adjusts the steering response for road conditions.

So what’s the result of all this technology and power? Lamborghini says 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph. The beauty of its design is its ability to be fun even at lower speeds, which many performance cars don’t like. Cylinder deactivation technology cuts off five cylinders when full power isn’t needed, resulting in a combined 19 mpg fuel efficiency. You can have just as much fun without having to stop as often for gas.
