The Purest Expression of Luxury and Performance in Manhattan
If such a thing is possible, Bentley has added even more luxury to the 2017 Mulsanne. Bentley’s keystone sedan is now quieter, smoother, and … well, luxurious. For owners interested in additional rear seat room, there is even an Extended Wheelbase with 9.8 inches of wheelbase dedicated to the rear seats.
The Mulsanne was introduced in 2010 and was positioned as a more sporty alternative to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Early owners commented that the Mulsanne ride was less than stellar and the turbocharged 6.8-liter engine was noisy. Bentley took these comments to heart and redesigned the Mulsanne to eliminate these quirks. This does not mean the Mulsanne is boring to drive — to the contrary, it’s a lot of fun to get sporty with it.
The 2017 Mulsanne has a front-end redesign from the windshield forward. It offers a wider and more muscular grille evoking mid-20th Century Bentleys, and new headlights with a linear alignment of the larger and smaller lights. A new rear bumper gives a wider look, and new rear lights give a “B” pattern when lighted. There are unique wheels for each model trim — Mulsanne, Mulsanne Speed, and the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase.
The engine is now a 6.8-liter turbocharged overhead valve V-8 offering a base 505 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of torque, with a boosted 530 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque in the Mulsanne Speed. The Speed accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 190 mph. The engine rests on active mounts to reduce noise and vibration. The suspension has been upgraded with stiffer control arm bushings, continuous damping, and higher capacity air springs. Even the tires have been specially designed to reduce noise by 50 percent. To control the heavy Mulsanne during braking, carbon-ceramic brakes are available which is a first in the luxury sedan segment.
Owners not only demand luxury but in today’s world connectivity is as important. The Mulsanne features an infotainment system with an 8-inch color touchscreen connected to a 60-gigabyte solid state hard drive. Along with touch, the system has a haptic controller in the center stack. The navigation system uses Google Earth, and there is a TFT screen ahead of the driver which has a customizable wealth of information. Owners can choose a custom Naim audio system and a pair of 10.2-inch Android tablets which rise from the back of the front seats with the push of a button. There is also an on-board 4G WiFi network for Internet connectivity.
The Mulsanne is hand built, taking about 400 hours for each vehicle. This has allowed Bentley to add many modern touches including adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, and adaptive headlights by retrofitting without a complete redesign. The Extended Wheelbase is available with two separate rear seats and an expanded center console. There are electrically powered leg rests which pivot out and up on command. The center console contains two carefully crafted aluminum tables which can be tilted up to 20 degrees and can hold up to 88 pounds each. The tables contain 761 separate parts and deploy without the need for electrical motors using springs and dampers.
