First Review of the 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster

There have only been five Porsche Speedster limited edition vehicles produced since 1948, and the new 2019 911 Speedster is the first one based on the GT3 Touring platform. What has resulted is the creation of an open-top roadster with an aggressive performance profile. Only 1,948 of these special 911 Speedsters will be created with delivery starting in late 2019.

The 911 Speedster will use the GT3 Touring’s naturally aspirated 4.0 liter flat-six engine and 6-speed manual gearbox. No turbocharging is needed to produce a healthy 502 horsepower. It also uses the same sharply tuned performance suspension from the GT3 Touring (although not as tight since it sits 5 mm higher) and gains the individual throttle bodies from the GT3 R racer. Some of the design features include:

  • A lower windscreen to create a low profile for the 911 Speedster
  • Carbon fiber body panels to reduce weight including the largest rear deck lid produced by Porsche
  • Fixed carbon fiber seats
  • A low weight revised exhaust system
  • Thinner roof materials and nylon door pulls

One difference drivers will appreciate is the electronic dampers are set a bit softer, allowing the 911 Speedster to absorb road irregularities better than the GT3 Touring without losing the thrill of how the GT3 platform handles the road. For purists wanting a tighter suspension, there is a button on the center console which allows the driver to stiffen the ride.

The engine carries a 9,000 RPM redline with a high-pressure gas delivery system and a dry sump oil system designed to prevent oil starvation during high G forces. For drivers who don’t wish to be bothered with tapping the accelerator pedal when downshifting, there is a convenient “auto blip” button which will match engine revolutions for you. For those who want the ultimate experience, there is also a button to disable stability control and another to turn stability and traction control completely off, which is probably most suitable for track runs.
