Bentley Brings the First Ultra-Luxury Plug-In Hybrid on the Market
Bentley automobiles are known for their luxurious appointments and powerful engines. However, Bentley has announced plans to place a full line of hybrid vehicles on the market by 2023 and electric choices for all models by 2025. The first vehicle to benefit from this plan is the 2020 Bentley Bentayga SUV.
The 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is a plug-in version and will be coming to Manhattan Motorcars in late 2019. The big difference is the engine, with the Hybrid using a turbocharged V-6 developing 335 HP which is paired with a 126 kW permanent magnet electric motor. The combination offers 443 HP and 516 lb-ft of torque. Power delivery is smooth as is the transitions between gas and electric modes. The electric motor handles acceleration from a stop to about 30 mph.
The Bentayga Hybrid can be driven in one of three modes: EV electric mode only (up to 84 MPH); Hybrid using both gas and electric motors; Hold which reserves the electric motor only for EV mode. The system will recharge in 2.5 hours on a 240V system and about 7 hours on a normal house circuit. The Hybrid, like all Bentaygas, uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. Estimated mileage ratings have not yet been published but should well exceed the gas-only Bentayga mileage of 17 mpg combined with the V-8 engine.
The interior of the Bentayga Hybrid is classic Bentley with ultra-fine leathers and other materials, precise craftsmanship, and particular care to details like upholstery stitching and the choice of interior accents. Due to the battery pack required for the Hybrid, there is no third row of seating available so the Hybrid is a 5-passenger SUV.
