Fun Doesn’t Stop in the 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman
The legendary 718 Cayman is reborn in its latest generation, and creates a whole new meaning of “entry level” performance. The rebirth began with the 2017 model with new body features including front and rear bumpers, fenders, headlights, and taillights. The most significant change was replacing the venerable flat-six engine with a turbocharged flat-four. The new engine develops 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, which are both increases over the previous flat-six. Porsche states this engine change makes the 718 Cayman base trim faster than the previous Cayman S, with stated 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds with a manual transmission or 4.7 with the PDK automatic.
The new 2018 Cayman is offered in two model trims, the base Cayman and the Cayman S. The base Cayman can be enhanced with the Premium Package offering full leather seating with 14-way power seat controls with heated seats, bi-Xenon headlights, and dual-zone climate control. Additional add-ons include Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch transmission, Porsche Connect with Apple CarPlay, and active suspension management.
All 718 Caymans come with the Porsche Communication Management System and a 7-inch centered infotainment display. It offers both touchscreen and voice controls, and will show a digital and customizable driver display for navigation, audio, telemetry, and more. Other features include standard Bluetooth and USB ports, available 3D navigation, an upgraded 10-speaker Bose® or 12-speaker Burmester audio system, and the Porsche Connect system mentioned above that connects to a iPhone (no Android at present) app for remote climate control, door lock-unlock, and other features.
Inside the 718 Cayman is a cabin that exceeds the comfort and style of most competitors in the sport class. The black interior look is enhanced by brushed metal accents, unique air vents, and luxurious leather wrapping including the three-spoke steering wheel and manual shift lever. Partial leather seating is standard with full leather available as an option. The 718 Cayman is a two-seat performance sedan with its mid-engine configuration. There is 14.9 cubic feet of storage split between the front trunk and rear hatch area, which matches the capacity of the Corvette.
